Fort Salonga Elementary School

Excellence in Education

Principal's Message

Ms. Stephanie Montecalvo,

"The mission of Fort Salonga Elementary School is to inspire life-long student curiosity, creativity and independence. Staff, students, parents and community members will work collaboratively to foster these ideals."

“Fort Salonga Elementary-Where Everybody Is Somebody Special"

Welcome to Fort Salonga Elementary School. Fort Salonga School, built in 1967 has a long and proud history of educational excellence, which provides instruction from kindergarten through the third grade. It’s warm and nurturing environment allows for students to be challenged and reach their full potential both through academic and emotional development.

The staff at Fort Salonga has a wealth of experience and enthusiasm for our students. As you enter the main lobby at Fort Salonga you are greeted warmly, as you are a member of the “Fort Salonga Family.” The faculty is dedicated professionals who have a love for children and learning. They provide a rich balanced literacy program that is made up of several types of reading and writing. This researched based program: includes read alouds, shared reading, literature circles and independent reading. It is through Guided Reading, that children are supported as they develop their reading skills and it is aligned with the State Common Core Standards. The ultimate goal of Guided Reading is to allow children to utilize learned reading strategies independently and with teachers monitoring their students through consistent observation. Students are periodically leveled according to their individual abilities. At the lower levels we utilize the Wilson Fundation Program.

Fort Salonga Elementary School prides itself in being a 21st Century school that has incorporated technology into the classrooms. Each classroom includes a series of computers that the students use on a daily basis, Smart Boards and document cameras. We have acquired chrome books for students in the upper grades for individual usage. Our younger students work with tablets. Our math program lends itself to Smart Board Technology and is aligned with the State Common Core Standards. With the Common Core English Language Arts Standards, Science and Social Studies are taught through literature as well as literacy non-fiction. These standards ensure that students are being prepared to read, write and research across the curriculum. Our annual science fair gives students the opportunity to showcase their talents in the field of Science.

We are especially proud of being featured in the book “Schools for All Kinds Of Minds.” We have fostered the type of learning environment that empowers students to adopt a “learner center approach” and embraces the various learning styles of each student. That belief, which continues to this day, identifies the various learning functions that a child will need prior to beginning an academic task.

Additionally, we offer a number of clubs and activities which provide a well-balanced program for the students at Fort Salonga. Our third grade students are encouraged to participate in Science Club, Math Club, Chorus, Art Club and Student Council. Supporting the outstanding staff is our wonderful Fort Salonga Parent Teacher Association that is made up of dedicated parent volunteers. They are equal partners in the education of their children.

Lastly, our greatest concern is for our student's safety and overall well being. The Fort Salonga family is eagerly anticipating your child’s arrival and we look forward to a successful 2023-2024 school year.
